SUMMARY:Free Haiku Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Calling all poets and nature lovers! Join us for a captivating free Haiku Writing Workshop for all-comers\, led by Lynn Davidson.\nYou can then enter your haiku poem in the Haiku Competition\, held  throughout the month of October as part of Pātaka Museum + Gallery’s 25th birthday celebration to encourage emerging and established writers to share their reflections and aspirations of Pataka. Entries can be dropped off to the front desk.\nWhy haiku? To celebrate the Japanese Garden at Pātaka\, overlooked by the Spine. It is in the karesansui style\, which represents mountains and water through the use of rocks and gravel\, an authentic design created by gardeners from Nishio City\, Porirua’s Sister City in Japan. The Nishio gardeners visited in 2013 and 2018\, to tend the garden and train Council gardeners in the specialist skills of traditional garden maintenance\, to maintain its authenticity. \nSo\, immerse yourself in the beauty of our cherished Japanese garden and let your creativity bloom as you craft haiku poems inspired by Pātaka. This is a unique chance to celebrate nature’s serenity through words and capture the essence of our cultural haven. No experience is required – just an open heart and a love for the art of expression. This is a drop-in event so no booking required. \n\nStay after the workshop for some birthday cake\, at 1pm\, courtesy of the Friends of Pātaka.\n\nThe Haiku workshop and competition are sponsored by Friends of Pātaka.\nNational Poetry Day

SUMMARY:Classical viola works performed by NZSM students
DESCRIPTION:FREE CONCERT FOR FRIENDS AND CHILDREN; $5 FOR OTHERS. \nThree  young\, highly talented and accomplished viola players – Aucklander Taliesin Amoore and Wellingtonians Lauren Jack and Zephyr Wills – offer a programme of works for viola accompanied by the piano. This is a great opportunity to hear seldom-played masterpieces of the viola repertoire by three of the School of Music’s promising up-and-coming musicians. \nTaliesin Amoore is a viola student at the NZSM and a member of the Eden Quartet\, a string quartet of highly talented and motivated first-year music performance students who have performed in Wellington and other centres in NZ. Only beginning to learn a stringed instrument since starting high school\, Tal’s enormous self-motivation has driven him to succeed in a far shorter time than is usual and he has been accepted into the National Youth Orchestra\, the Adam Summer School and various youth orchestras and chamber groups in Auckland and Wellington. \nZephyr Wills and Lauren Jack are both Honours performance students from the Wellington area making waves round Wellington. \nLauren has been the principal violist in the National Youth Orchestra and the NZSM orchestra and is the current principal of the Wellington Youth Orchestra. She was in the winning group in the 2017 Chamber Music NZ Community Trust Chamber Music Contest and has played as a casual player with Orchestra Wellington and the NZSO. \nZephyr has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra for several years\, has attended the Adam Summer School 4 times and received A+ in most of his performance exams. He is the inaugural recipient of Orchestra Wellington’s Linda & Max Simmons Viola Fellowship\, entitling him to free lessons with the principal viola and to perform with the orchestra this year. \n \nThis concert is from the Friends of Pātaka’s 2021 Winter Music Series:\n25 July: The Pacific Connection\nI August:  Gillian Boucher & Bob McNeill\n8 August: Classical viola works performed by NZSM students
