SUMMARY:Classical viola works performed by NZSM students
DESCRIPTION:FREE CONCERT FOR FRIENDS AND CHILDREN; $5 FOR OTHERS. \nThree  young\, highly talented and accomplished viola players – Aucklander Taliesin Amoore and Wellingtonians Lauren Jack and Zephyr Wills – offer a programme of works for viola accompanied by the piano. This is a great opportunity to hear seldom-played masterpieces of the viola repertoire by three of the School of Music’s promising up-and-coming musicians. \nTaliesin Amoore is a viola student at the NZSM and a member of the Eden Quartet\, a string quartet of highly talented and motivated first-year music performance students who have performed in Wellington and other centres in NZ. Only beginning to learn a stringed instrument since starting high school\, Tal’s enormous self-motivation has driven him to succeed in a far shorter time than is usual and he has been accepted into the National Youth Orchestra\, the Adam Summer School and various youth orchestras and chamber groups in Auckland and Wellington. \nZephyr Wills and Lauren Jack are both Honours performance students from the Wellington area making waves round Wellington. \nLauren has been the principal violist in the National Youth Orchestra and the NZSM orchestra and is the current principal of the Wellington Youth Orchestra. She was in the winning group in the 2017 Chamber Music NZ Community Trust Chamber Music Contest and has played as a casual player with Orchestra Wellington and the NZSO. \nZephyr has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra for several years\, has attended the Adam Summer School 4 times and received A+ in most of his performance exams. He is the inaugural recipient of Orchestra Wellington’s Linda & Max Simmons Viola Fellowship\, entitling him to free lessons with the principal viola and to perform with the orchestra this year. \n \nThis concert is from the Friends of Pātaka’s 2021 Winter Music Series:\n25 July: The Pacific Connection\nI August:  Gillian Boucher & Bob McNeill\n8 August: Classical viola works performed by NZSM students

SUMMARY:'Prince Philip and our Money' – an illustrated talk by Dr Mark Stocker
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Pātaka are invited to join Friends of Te Papa at their members cost of $25 (non-members $30)\, which includes a glass of wine and free parking. \nAlthough senior members of the royal family\, especially the Queen\, famously carry no money\, Prince Philip has exerted a profound influence on what British currency looks like. Between 1952 and 1999\, Prince Philip was President of the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC) on the design of coins\, medals\, seals and decorations. \nDr Mark Stocker will present an illustrated talk based upon his article which was published in Majesty magazine in February 2021\, where he says that the major role of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh\, Prince Philip\, in world coin design through the Royal Mint over many years was just one example among many of his service and duty\, and that he was impressed  to see his many good\, uncelebrated qualities emerge. \nDr Mark Stocker was an Associate Professor and Programme co-ordinator for Art History and Theory at the Department of History and Art History\, Otago University before taking up the position of Curator Historical International Art at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa\, retiring in 2019. Dr Stocker remains an energetic publisher\, with over 200 books\, articles and essays to his credit. In 2014 he was elected as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA). In June 2021 the Royal Mint is publishing Dr Stocker’s book When Britain Went Decimal: The Coinage of 1971. \nTo book: \nVisit the event website  members can use the code 210627 \nEmail: friends@tepapa.govt.nz \nPhone: (04) 381 7051 \nDoorsales will also be available on the day.

SUMMARY:Presentation on Colin McCahon by Dr Peter Simpson
DESCRIPTION:The director and staff of Pātaka Art + Museum warmly invite all Pātaka Friends to hear a fascinating illustrated presentation on the life and work of the late\, great Colin McCahon by leading McCahon scholar\, writer\, and curator Dr Peter Simpson at 2pm \, Friday 30 April.\nColin McCahon (1919–1987) was New Zealand’s greatest twentieth-century artist. Through landscapes\, biblical paintings and abstraction\, the introduction of words and Māori motifs\, McCahon’s work came to define a distinctly New Zealand modernist idiom.\n“I’ve had the good fortune to attend many lectures and presentations by Dr Peter Simpson over the last 20 plus years. His speaking voice is an appealing\, gravelly baritone. He makes his points succinctly\, with the occasional rhetorical flourish or the odd wry chuckle. His recall in these moments\, for dates\, or for the joy and fitful enmity of friendship is uncanny. On the subject of Colin McCahon (1919 – 1987) Simpson could be described as a walking computer of New Zealand art history.” – Hamish Coney \nDr Peter Simpson is a former associate professor of English at the University of Auckland. He is the author of numerous critically acclaimed books including Colin McCahon: The Titirangi Years\, 1953–1959 (AUP\, 2007) and Bloomsbury South: The Arts in Christchurch 1933–1953 (AUP\, 2016). He has also curated three significant exhibitions of McCahon’s work.
