Since 2013, Friends of Pātaka have run a biannual art awards initiative for artists living, working and/or studying in the Porirua area. A range of prizes is offered:
| Open Award | $1,000, plus support to use the facilities at Pātaka as the Artist in Residence for a month – Currently sponsored by the Smith Family |
| Highly Commended Award | $750 – Currently sponsored by Tommy’s Real Estate Mana |
| Creativity and Promise Scholarship | A six-month Level 4 Certificate at The Learning Connexion – Sponsored by The Learning Connection |
| First Time Entry Award | $500 – Currently sponsored by Leina Isno |
| Viewers’ Choice Award | $500 – Currently sponsored by Friends of Pataka |
Entries are through submission of an original artwork completed within 24 months of the date of entry. All entries must be available for purchase. One work per artist. There is an entry fee of $10 for students, $20 all others.
The Friends of Pātaka Art Awards are held every two years – the next is in 2026. Registration is early July, with artworks submitted in late July for exhibition at Pātaka Art+Museum. A few days later the awards are announced and the exhibition opens and continues for around two months.

15 September, 2pm: Viewers’ Choice Award announced
17-18 September: Collection of unsold artworks from Pātaka Reception between 11.30am and 4pm each day
